Ministry appoints Penghulus to monitor goods prices

RAUB: The Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry will appoint Penghulus (village headman) nationwide to assist in enforcement of consumers affairs and help the government monitor prices of goods.

Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the ministry needed the Penghulus help in the matter as it did not have enough enforcement staff.

"We will appoint them as enforcement assistants to monitor unethical traders who cheat consumers by increasing prices and lie about weight and measurement of goods," he told reporters after launching the Pahang Penghulus Consumerism Seminar at the Rakan Muda Complex in Bera near here today.

However, Ismail Sabri said their role did not include authority to fine traders for offences
