Special privileges cards for former NS trainees proposed

MIRI: Former national service trainees will be issued with smart cards from next July to give them certain special privileges.

National service chairman Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe said yesterday that the benefits proposed for cardholders include travel and shopping discounts.

He said the card could serve as recommendation for employment in security-related government agencies, enrolment into tertiary education institutions and for starting business ventures.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the Miri NS Camp in Sungai Rait, about 15km from here, he said the cards would also serve as a way to monitor the progress of former trainees after completing their training.

He added that arrangements were being made with several companies, including airlines, transporters and leading supermarkets, to pass on some of the benefits to the former trainees.

There were now about 417,000 former NS trainees throughout the country, he said.

Earlier, in his speech, Dr Tiki reminded camp staffers and trainees to take extra precautions in dealing with the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.
