Malaysia unlikely to experience chain effects from Japan's Sendai Tsunami

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have been advised not to panic over the tsunami that hit Japan.

Meteorological Department deputy director-general Che Gayah Ismail said rough seas and high water level warning for the coast of Sabah and Labuan, following the tsunami warning alert for the Philippines and Indonesia, was lifted at 9.40pm last night.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had issued a tsunami warning for over 50 countries and territories including Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, Russia and almost the entire Pacific basin following the quake.

Che Gayah added that Malaysia was unlikely to experience severe chain effects from the tsunami as the country was “protected” by the landmass in the Philippines.
