R. Ragu: From Johor to Perlis on foot

JOHOR BARU: An odd job worker and his three children are walking a distance of 1,370km from here to Kuala Perlis to promote the patriotic spirit among youth ahead of the Merdeka celebrations.

R. Ragu, 38, his daughters, Nithyarubhini, 14, and Nithyadarshini, 11, and son, Surya, 8, began the journey, which will take 25 days, from Dataran Bandaraya here yesterday morning.

Ragu said the walk was Nithyarubhini's idea.

In August last year, Ragu, Nithyarubhini and Nithyadarshini had completed a 937km walk from Malacca to Alor Star.

"My family and I are doing this because we want to inculcate the patriotic spirit in today's youth.

"This is our country, regardless of our race or religion. We are doing this because we love our country."

This is the first time that Surya, from SK Ho Seng Ong Methodist, is joining the walk.

Ragu, who is from Bercham, Ipoh, said he also wanted to spread the message to youth not to miss out on nature's offerings.

Ragu's wife, G. Neelaawathi, 32, and two children, Nithya Harjeevni, 5, and Samuel Josiah, 3, will be following in a car in case of an emergency.
