2014 Asian Games: Tai Cheau Xuen wins first gold for Malaysia

INCHEON: Tai Cheau Xuen opened Malaysia's medal count at the 2014 Asian Games by winning gold in the women's nanquan-nandao combined event today.

A bronze medalist in the same event four years ago in Guangzhou, Cheau Xuen scored a total of 19.23 points to finish top of the podium at the Ganghwa Dolmens Gymnasium.

Cheau Xuen was only ranked third after scoring 9.62 in the nandao but a near-flawless performance in the nanquan accrued 9.61 points to storm past the early leader, China's Wei Hong.

Indonesia's Juwita Niza Wasni won silver with 19.19 points while Wei Hong had to be satisfied with bronze on 19.15 points.

Another Malaysian, Diana Bong, ended last of 12 competitors with 18.25 points after an error-strewn display.
