Komtar: Set your sights on Penang’s top view

GEORGE TOWN: Starting tomorrow, visitors to Level 65 of the Komtar will be able to enjoy an unobscured view of Penang island’s eastern plain.
Called Window of the Top, the new vantage point will enable visitors to see Pulau Jerejak which is more than 12km away.

“Komtar’s location is fantastically strategic, it is like a tall watchtower and being circular you get an all-round view,” said Datuk Jean Koh, chief operating officer for Only World Group (OWG) which operates the observatory deck.

She said Level 65 was about 230m above the ground and from that height, visitors can see up to 150km away, making neighbouring Kedah a part of the view.

“We have turned Level 65 into an observatory deck. As you walk around the floor, you get to see the island and its surroundings from unique angles,” she said.

Koh said that there would be so much panoramic views to take in that many visitors would need to ponder these over a cuppa, so OWG has set up a coffee corner on the deck.

A nice touch is that each window is affixed with information panels on the landmarks they are seeing, such as Penang Jetty, Kek Lok Si Temple and Penang Hill.

A souvenir store and photo-opportunity corner help round off the experience.

After OWG won a 45-year lease on five levels at Komtar in 2012, its task was to revitalise the landmark building.

It started by adding three levels to the 65-storey edifice. With that, Level 68 was the new rooftop which will also be open to visitors from tomorrow.

There is a special section of glass flooring at the observatory deck, where brave visitors can step past the external wall and look down on the scenery below their feet.

Even more hair-raising is the glass skywalk on Level 68, touted to be the highest in the country. To get to Levels 65 and 68, start at Level Five.

Other attractions at Komtar are a “Durian The King of Fruits” gallery and “Tongkat Ali King” museum.
